Esta é uma obra pequena, com menos de 100 páginas, um thriller que encontrei no kindle e como bónus estava disponível de forma gratuita!
A narrativa decorre na década dos 60, depois de um infeliz evento no seio familiar, o detective Jack regressa ao trabalho e vai investigar o desaparecimento/reaparecimento e homicídio da Anne, uma jovem que após um concerto ia apanhar o autocarro para casa mas que nunca chegou ao seu destino.
Este livro tem a particularidade de à medida que vamos lendo, acompanhamos o decorrer dos eventos e atitudes do assassino, sabemos logo o que se está a passar mas jamais quem é o perpetuador, a não ser na fase final do livro.
Dá-se reincidência e mais crimes são cometidos mas eventualmente os caso são resolvidos e a justiça é cumprida. Que sirva de alerta para todos.

Opinião:

A autora traz-nos a história de Emily, que acaba o relacionamento com o seu namorado de longa data, despede-se do seu trabalho em Nova Iorque e decide ir passar um fim de semana na casa de férias do seu pai, numa pequena cidade longínqua.

O que seria apenas um fim de semana no local que lhe deu tantas alegrias na infância, acaba por se tornar numa estadia de duas semanas que depois se prolongam por seis meses. A Emily decide então passar este tempo a renovar a casa, virar a página e mudar a sua vida.

Entendo que por vezes as pessoas tomam decisões com a cabeça quente mas foi um bocado parvo a Emily pegar no seu carro que estava parado à tanto tempo, não vir preparada com roupas quentes de Inverno, não trazer lanternas nem suprimentos e esperar que uma casa que estava abandonada há 20 anos estivesse minimamente habitável. Ela ainda teve foi muita sorte em se ter cruzado com pessoas decentes e que lhe quiseram ajudar.

Ao longo do livro está evidente um crescimento pessoal da protagonista, uma mudança na forma como vê a vida e de se relacionar com os que a rodeiam, o facto de conseguir ser capaz de aceitar ajuda dos outros. Ter regressado à antiga casa do seu pai foi o que lhe trouxe uma sensação de desfecho não só por entender que o pai a amava, bem como o entendimento do trágico acidente da irmã.
